A FEW NEW(ISH) SONGS THAT I LOVE

Hey y’all, another week has rolled by, and you know what that means! That’s right, I am back with another list of some songs that I have been feeling in the last week. Not all of these songs are super new; a couple of them are songs that I did not talk about last week because they did not really fit the theme. There is not really a theme for this week; one thing that is different, though, is that they are not all rap songs. I thought that I should switch it up and talk about something else a little bit this week. I did not include any songs that I like from the new Jeezy album or the new Brockhampton album; I will be posting reviews for those albums later this week, so you can check out what my favorite tracks are on those albums when I post them. With all of that being said, here is my list. Let me know if you like any of these songs as well!

TAMPA BAY BUSTDOWN – YUNG GRAVY FEAT. CHIEF KEEF AND Y2K

Move over, Lil Nas X, Yung Gravy and Chief Keef are making real country trap music. While Lil Nas X’s brand of country trap sounds a lot more like modern country-pop artists(like Luke Bryan or Sam Hunt), this unlikely duo, with the help of Y2K, has made a banjo driven traditional old school country trap banger that is unlike anything I have heard before. Yung Gravy’s low and smooth voice actually sounds awesome on this bass-heavy twanging jam, and Chief Keef embraces the sound in a manner that you need to hear for yourself. Seriously check this song out because it is so great and unique.

JESUS FORGIVE ME, I’M A THOT – JPEGMAFIA

If you thought there could not be a weirder song on this list than that country-trap banger that I just wrote about, you were incorrect because this one is way more strange. If you like lyrical and sophisticated rap, check this one out; it is a trippy and strange gospel jazz rap cut that is really unlike anything else you will hear; whether Jpegmafia is calmly spitting or yell-rapping or singing, he speaks with so much passion that it just engages me immediately. I do not want to do it an injustice by saying too much more so please check it out.

DISPATCH – YOUNG NUDY FEAT. DABABY

This brilliantly fun cloud rap trap, that was produced by Pierre Bourne, is so weird and trippy and everything it should be with Pierre and Nudy working together on it. Dababy brings his usual intensity and humor, which adds a nice contrast to the nasally and soft voice that Young Nudy raps with on this one. The best thing about this song to me is the production; the melody is made by this weird and distorted horn sound that almost sounds alien, and the trap beat is so twitchy and anxious it forces you to start dancing.

POSE – YO GOTTI FEAT. LIL UZI VERT

I just really love pretty much any music made by Memphis gangster rappers. They just have this level of swag and smoothness mixed with a scariness that no other rappers possess. The hood of Memphis has got to be a scary place. This beat is that classic Memphis horrorcore trap that reminds me so much of the legendary Three 6 Mafia, and I fricken love it. Yo Gotti is as smooth and as witty and ever, and I imagine this will be another one of his many underground club bangers. Lil Uzi Vert sounds great on this sort of dirty and scary trap beat, as it really fits his style and sound. If you love trap, you will love this one.

CROSS YOU OUT – CHARLI XCX FEAT. SKY FERREIRA

I actually really loved this song when I first heard it at the beginning of last week, but I did not include it on last week’s list since the rest of it was strictly hip hop. This new single from Charli XCX’s upcoming debut album(that I am super pumped to hear) is a little more tame than the last couple of singles off of this record. ‘Cross You Out’ is a sweet cloud pop track that focuses a lot more on Charli’s writing ability than her more avant-garde and out there pop and EDM fusions. I love seeing this softer side of Charli because it shows how multi-dimensional she is; she can write beautiful chill pop songs and also push the boundary on what pop should song like.

LIVE FOREVER – NASTY CHERRY

The awesome new all girl pop-rock band that Charli XCX has been promoting has dropped another great single that shows yet another kind of rock they can make. So far every song that this band has dropped has had a different rock sound, but still had this common pop-punk sound about it that I think really comes from the lead singers voice and attitude. This track has the melody and sound of a late 90’s alternative rock track. I swear to God this song could easily have been in an American Pie movie or another one of those goofy college humor movies from that era. I really can not wait to see what Nasty Cherry does next, because they are proving to be so multi-faceted.

TRUTH – KAYLEE CROSSFIRE

The up and coming Milwaukee star who released the banger ‘Baddie Alert’ (check out this post that I wrote about ‘Baddie Alert’ and some other songs that I have been digging by other Milwaukee artists https://eastsidevibess.com/2019/07/24/best-newish-songs-from-milwaukee-artists/) earlier this summer is back with a song that shows how diverse and talented of an artist she is. On this track, Kaylee proves that she is more than a rapper, as this is an early 2000s style R&B track. It really reminds me of Destiny’s Child or Keri Hilson. If you love 2000s R&B(and I know that a lot of people my age do) you have to check out this one.
